Devon Rural Archive: Exhibition of the role of local shops
Shilstone, Modbury, Ivybridge, Devon, PL21 0TW
The Exhibition is open during our normal operating hours, Wednesday to Sunday from 10.30am - 4.00pm, within the Heritage Open Days week.
Located at the Devon Rural Archive, Shilstone, Modbury, South Devon.
The Devon Rural Archive was set up as part of the beautiful Shilstone Estate, as a way of encouraging the interest in the Historic Buildings, Landscapes, and Way of Life of Rural Devon. Through sharing our collection of Shop Photos from our Image Bank, we hope to highlight the importance of local shops, often family run businesses, over time from across the county.

The Archive is located upstairs, whilst the cafe and disabled toilet are downstairs. There is a fire door for access to the Archive from the carpark avoiding stairs, but has a raised threshold & visitors would need to cross an uneven grass verge to reach the door - this door can only be opened from the inside by a Volunteer or Member of Staff (unless required in an emergency). Driving to Shilstone entails some stretches of narrow lanes, but the views across the Devon Landscape are worth it! There is no public transport to us.
The Archive is part of the beautiful rural Shilstone Estate, featuring a Woodland Walk, Valley Walk, Cafe & Garden. The Barn Restaurant is also open 12 -5 on Sundays, booking recommended. As an events venue, Shilstone sometimes has areas closed for private functions. If you would like to ensure we are open on the day you plan to visit, please ring us on 01548 830832, or email us at [email protected]
