Dover Transport Museum – Old Park Estate, Then and Now
Port Zone, Willingdon Road, Whitfield, Dover, Kent, CT16 2JX
The session is in two parts.
Part 1 is an illustrated talk covering 3 phases of the estate’s history. The first phase deals with the early history of the Bewsbury and Buckland hunting estate, which was to become Old Park, from Medieval times up to its association with the National Playing Fields scheme in 1938. The second deals with the military years, with the building and operation of Old Park Barracks. The third charts the decline of the estate, its re-development and the acquisition by the museum of the derelict garrison sports and theatre complex thanks to support from Dover Harbour Board, the National Lottery Fund and Dover District Council. This element will show the renovation of the buildings by volunteers and the development of the transport and social history collections the museum now holds.
Part 2 – offers the chance for a free tour of the museum including selected areas not ordinarily open to the public. Refreshments will be available.
