Eagle House has been the home of the Clackclose Conservative Club since 1909 and houses the Douglas Back Room The building was once the residence of Arthur Benjamin Bird, a respected Justice of the Peace and son of miller Jacob Mason Bird. Douglas Back, CBE, 1924-2017 ran a tailors business in Lynn Road. He was also a JP and worked hard for the Downham community
The Eagle emblem on the building connects Eagle House to Eagle Roller Mills, now known as Heygates Flour Mill on Railway Road. Both structures feature the proud symbol of the Eagle. Jacob Mason Bird established the steam-driven mill in 1851, and his son Aubrey later modernised it with the help of the Heygate company. The eagle serves as a lasting tribute to their contributions to the town's industrial heritage.
In earlier times, circa 1933-39 the Douglas Back room was Hovells hairdressers run by Leonard George Hovell.
