Downham Market..Town Crier on steps of the Town Hall
Town Hall steps, 6 Market Place, Downham Market, Norfolk, PE38 9DE
The Downham Market Town Crier, Ray Wales is unfortunately not available on the day but another Town Crier has agreed to step in.
Mike Wabe, the Watton Town Crier and official Crier for Norwich Pride is a member of both the Ancient & Honourable Guild of Town Criers and the Loyal Company of Town Crier.
With the coming of modern communications such as radio, television and the Internet, you might think that the Town Crier would become extinct. Not so, and today there are about 250 Town Criers around the country, and they are in great demand for civic ceremonies, charity functions, tourism events, weddings and commercial advertising, where their colourful livery, imposing presence and historical significance are greatly valued.
Mike will write a proclamation specifically for the Downham Marker event. He will write it as rhyming couplets, and if reading some of his previous examples is anything to go by, will incorporate some humour.
Mike won a Town Crier Competition held in Sleaford...the theme being Embarrassing moments....so prepare to smile!
