Downham Market Quaker Graveyard
Quaker Cemetery, 71 Bridge Street, Downham Market, Norfolk, PE38 9DW
Behind the former Quaker Meeting House on Priory Road, the modest Quaker Burial ground is enveloped by trees and shrubs offering a peaceful retreat from the bustle of town life and space to reflect on the town’s rich spiritual history. Established in 1800 and active until 1899, this modest plot serves as a testament to the values of the Religious Society of Friends - commonly know as Quakers.
A Friends Meeting House was established in Downham Market as long ago as 1701 but ceased to be used by 1796. The subsequent revival was due to Zacchary Clarke of the White House at Ryston End and the Meeting House re-opened in 1815. His daughters married two brothers named Doyle and their gravestones can be found here. Zacchary also opened a school for young boys in the present Dial House in Railway Road.
Visitors are asked to approach with respect, honouring the legacy of those interred and the principles they upheld.
