Downham Art Circle – Celebrating 50 Creative Years!
Founded in 1975, Downham Art Circle has spent half a century nurturing artistic talent in our community. From humble beginnings to a vibrant, diverse group, they’re proof that anyone with a paintbrush (or tablet!) can find joy in creativity.
This group of amazing artists are putting on a special exhibition just for Heritage Open Day in the Town Hall.
Begin your tour in the Town Hall foyer. See a painting come to life in a live demonstration ...want to see more? ... then pop upstairs to the impressive Art exhibition interpreting the architecture of Downham Market’s fabulous buildings. Inspired by photographs taken by the Downham Market Photography for Fun group, you can also compare the artist’s skill working from a photograph.
Brushstrokes Through Time ... Thanks to the Art Circle’s founder Joyce Carter’s lovingly kept scrapbook—now digitised—the group’s journey is captured in photos, press clippings, and fond memories. And yes, Kathleen Wiseman, another founding member, inspires them every week! Now under the brilliant leadership of Chair Helen Thomas, they are making statements with colour and confidence. Today, members dabble in everything from watercolours and oils to encaustic and digital art. No Experience? No Problem!
Whether a nervous doodler or an aspiring Monet, you’ll find encouraging support, friendship, and probably some biscuits at the weekly meeting. No tests, no judgement—just creativity and camaraderie.
