Dr James Lind: a life with lemons (and added E300)... @ Gosport Community Hub
Gosport Community Hub, Brune Park Community School, Military Road, Gosport, Hampshire, PO12 3BF
Your speaker, Jane Wickenden, was for 20 years, between 2001-2021, Historic Collections Librarian at the Institute of Naval Medicine in Alverstoke. She returns to Gosport to talk about the life, work and journeys of Dr James Lind (1716-1794), the Royal Naval surgeon who was the second Chief Physician at the Royal Hospital Haslar. Against a background of the Royal Navy and naval medicine of Lind's times, you will hear about his study and treatment of scurvy, as well as his other contributions to naval medicine.
As well as investigating the reception of his ideas among his contemporaries, the talk will tell you how James Lind's work has influenced even modern medical research and modern policy in the Navy. Besides this, there will be excursions into the further reaches of James Lind's existence: slang, detective fiction, local sites of interest, what happened to his portrait, and at least one mysterious disappearance...
