East Anglia Methodist Heritage Centre Open Day
Buddells Lane, Wighton, Wells-next-the-Sea, Norfolk, NR23 1PG
The East Anglia Methodist Heritage Centre, situated in Wighton (between Wells Next the Sea and the pilgrimage centre of Walsingham, Norfolk) is holding an Open Day to give visitors the chance to learn about the history and impact of the Methodist Church in East Anglia over the past two hundred years. The Heritage Centre, which is housed in the former Primitive Methodist Chapel in the village, is a treasure trove of artefacts telling the story of the church through archive material, photos, pictures, ceramics and books. During the day volunteers will give short talks outlining the history of the church. One key artefact in the chapel is the American Reed organ which used to be played for services. Methodists are known for their love of singing and Charles Wesley, who with his brother John, sowed the seeds for what was to become the Methodist Church, wrote thousands of hymns (including 'Love Divine, All Love Excelling' and 'Hark the Herald Angels Sing'). From 2 pm there will be a chance to sing-a-long to your favourite hymns. The chapel opened as the heritage centre in 2023.
