Ewell Castle School
Ewell Castle School, Church Street, Ewell, Epsom, Surrey, KT17 2AW
Ewell Castle School celebrates 100 years this year and we are delighted to be welcoming visitors for the first time to explore our School and learn some of the history behind our grade II listed buildings.
The Castle building, built in 1814 for Thomas Calverley and designed by local architect Henry Kitchen, embraced the revived Gothic style of architecture prevalent in the Victorian period. The Castle housed an exceptional Japanese garden boasting a lake, tea house, grotto and a host of unusual trees and plant specimens from around the world some of which remain to be seen today.
On the 19th January 1926 Mr H R Budgell purchased the Castle building and founded the School starting with just 40 boys - he remained the Principal and Proprietor until his death in 1946.
Glyn House - formerly the vicarage to St Mary's Church - also has a rich heritage with the current impressive building (dating back to 1838 replacing the former parsonage) and extensive grounds.
Visitors are welcome to enjoy tours of the Senior and Prep School sites - both located opposite each other in Church Street, Ewell. Each tour will be 25 minutes, to allow 5 minutes at the end of each tour for visitors wishing to attend both tours to cross the road between our Prep and Senior School sites. Tours will take place on the hour and on the half hour from 12pm, with the last tour commencing at 14:30pm. Teas and coffees available at the Senior School. Tours will depart from the main entrance gates.
