Exeter Dissenters' Graveyard
Old St. Leonards Hall House, Roberts Road, Exeter, Devon, EX2 4HD
The event focusses on Exeter Dissenters Graveyard with activities in the Hall and at the Graveyard which is a short walk away. It answers the questions: who were the Dissenters?; why were there Dissenters?; why did they need their own Graveyard?; and how important are they in England's history?
The Hall will house an exhibition on the history of Dissent in England, on the history of the Graveyard and on notable Dissenters. There will be a Treasure Hunt for children and book stall, refreshments will be available. A Jane Austenish dialogue taken from contemporary letters will be performed live. There will be a short talk on the history of the Hall at the beginning of the event.
A signed route will link the Hall by a short walk to the Graveyard. There you can encounter a fully costumed Dissenter and learn something of her life. A guide will be on hand to show you round and answer questions.
At the Graveyard itself a 'Dissenter' in costume and a guide will be on hand to answer questions (in the Hall if the weather is bad).
The Graveyard is part of the historic heritage of this corner of St Leonards, a heritage which includes the Friends Meeting House, the Jewish Burial Ground, the Leper Hospital (of which there's no visible trace), Bull Meadow Park with the stream which flowed through it and St Leonards Old Hall itself.
