Farnley's Lancasterian Schoolroom
The Lancasterian School Room, Low Moorside Road, New Farnley, Leeds, West Yorkshire, LS12 5HY
Joseph Lancaster (25 November 1778 – 23 October 1838) was an English Quaker and public education innovator who developed a monitorial system of primary education designed to benefit poor children at a time when little or no education was available to them .
In the first decades of the 19th century his ideas found application in new schools established in growing industrial centres.
At the time of his death in 1838 there were said to be between 1200 and 1500 schools using the Lancasterian principles worldwide: hundreds were built in England including The Lancasterian School Room at Moor Top, New Farnley which was built by public subscription in 1815 and is now one of 2 remaining purpose-built Lancasterian Schools in the UK.
This talk will explore a little about the history of Farnley, Joseph Lancaster's story and the Lancasterian School System.
Refreshments will be available on a pay as you feel basis.
