Farsley Rehoboth Burial Ground Heritage Day Tour

7 Coal Hill Lane, Farsley, Leeds, West Yorkshire, LS28 5NA

  • 21 Sep 2025
  • In person
  • Pre-booking required

You are invited to tour a 200 year old burial ground that for years was neglected and untended. It is now reclaimed as a community asset to share its history, war graves, nature and ecology with connections and routes linking the past to the present.

The Farsley Rehoboth Baptist Burial Ground was a place of internment from 1785 to 2000 and reflected the growth of Farsley, in particular its textile industry with many prominent residents buried there.

In total 4,041 local people are interred in the Rehoboth all with their own stories and contribution to the growth and history of Farsley and Rodley.

For decades there was no access to visit graves (including registered War Graves) without trespass. The neglect to the steep and wooded two acre site was massive.

In 2019 our Charity purchased the Rehoboth as a community asset, commenced reclaiming the graveyard as well as preserving the ecology and landscape. We have galvanised the community to take ownership with 39,000 volunteer hours invested.

On 11th November 2019 we held an Armistice Day Service, featured on BBC Look North and have received coverage on numerous media channels. In 2023 we were adopted by David Attenborough’s Wild isles Trust.

The ecology is extensive and fascinating with a wide variety of wild life, birds, foliage and trees with a focus on planting and cultivating including a wildlife meadow and the sympathetic introduction of seeds and plants to combat climate change.

Our wildlife focus has included the re-homing of hedgehogs and the construction of habitats all linked by fully accessible, all-weather paths.

This year we have two family Trails: Our Architecture & History and Our Ecology & Wildlife. Thanks for Grant support from Leeds Civic Trust
