Film Show: Buffalo Bill's Visit to the Potteries
The Brampton, Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffordshire, ST5 0QP
This documentary - and collection of rare archive films from 120 years ago - tells the story of a pioneer and showman who helped to create the legend of the Wild West.
Born in an Iowa log cabin in 1846, William ‘Buffalo Bill’ Cody started working as a Pony Express rider at the age of 14. He served in the Union army during the Civil War and later as a scout during the Indian wars, being awarded the Medal of Honor in 1872. He earned his nickname while hunting buffalo to feed the construction crews of the Kansas Pacific Railroad. His fame began to spread when author Ned Bluntline wrote a dime novel about him, which was adapted as a theatrical production. Cody starred in the play before forming his own theatrical troupe. In 1883 he transformed himself into a master showman, creating and starring in a world-famous travelling show that brought the Wild West to life. Part circus, part history, Buffalo Bill's Wild West toured for three decades, playing to enthusiastic crowds across the United States and Europe. The show featured several performers who were famous in their own right, including Annie Oakley, her husband Frank Butler, and Calamity Jane. The programme draws upon rich archive materials of the period to explore the man behind the legend.
Buffalo BIll’s Wild West UK tour of 1904 began and ended here in North Staffordshire, and the three trains which transported his company of over 600 performers and 200 horses around the country had their winter quarters here in Etruria.
