Nottingham Road Cemetery, located in Chaddesden, Derby, has been a place of remembrance since its opening in 1855. As the largest cemetery in Derby, it spans over 70 acres and contains around 250,000 burials. Visitors can engage in various activities, from visiting family graves and researching genealogy to enjoying the plants and wildlife, admire the gothic architecture, or pay tribute at more than 300 Commonwealth War Graves. The cemetery boasts a wealth of interesting and historical memorials, celebrating the lives of notable Derbians.
Join us this autumn for the Friends of Nottingham Road Cemetery open day, presented in collaboration with Derby City Council and the national Heritage Open Days scheme, which this year focuses on Architecture. Our event will include popular features such as historical archive exhibitions, guided nature walks and a self-guided trail exploring notable graves. Engage with local funeral directors, stone masons, and florists and take advantage of our complimentary support in locating your ancestors’ graves. Supporting the HODs Architecture theme, we will showcase additional displays and offer guided trails that delve into the rich history and architecture of the cemetery and its monuments.
As the event date approaches, further details and timings will be published on the Friends of Nottingham Road Cemetery Facebook page. We encourage you to follow us for the latest updates.

The site features a network of footpaths accommodating prams & wheelchairs etc. However, please be aware that some graves are situated off the paths on uneven terrain, which may pose challenges for those using mobility aids or having walking difficulties. Caution is advised when accessing these areas. Vehicles are not permitted in the cemetery grounds, with the exception of Blue Badge holders requiring disabled access. Drivers must use only the main paths, adhering to the speed limit at all times and being respectful of pedestrians and graves. Dogs are welcome, but must be kept on a lead.
Toilet facilities are available near the main cemetery buildings. Light refreshments will be available for a small donation to local charities. Assistance in locating graves and obtaining burial details is offered by a small group of volunteers. Visitors seeking this support may experience a brief wait, depending on demand. Please come prepared with as much information as you have, such as names and dates. Given the cemetery's large area, our volunteers are unlikely to be able to accompany you to the gravesite, but they will make every effort to offer clear directions and a paper map.
