Marriage laws were different in the past. People have heard of Gretna Green but not its equivalents on the East Coast. Come along to this talk by Linda Bankier, Berwick Archivist to hear about these marriages and the priests who carried them out.

Known as Irregular or Border marriages, this form of marriage was very common in the 19th century. Few records survive but what does gives a fascinating insight into their frequency, format and the people who celebrated their marriage this way. Find out more, based on research undertaken over many years in both the archives and local newspapers. A must for Family Historians
