From Mill Workers to Makers: Farfield Mill
Farfield Mill Ltd,, Sedbergh, Cumbria, LA10 5LW
Across the weekend, visitors can explore displays, demonstrations and community exhibits revealing how people lived and worked in and around Farfield Mill through different periods of history. The event also forms part of Farfield Mill’s 25th anniversary year, marking twenty-five years since the building reopened in 2001 as an arts and heritage venue.
Heritage displays will focus on individuals connected to the Mill’s history, including mill worker Tom Cornthwaite and William Stainton, the Mill’s coachman, helping to bring personal stories and working lives to the forefront.
Sedbergh & District History Society will share objects, photographs and artefacts from their collection, with members available throughout the event to talk to visitors and share local knowledge and memories.
On Saturday 12 September, live demonstrations will showcase traditional skills and crafts, including a journey from fleece to fabric with the Weaving Friends, who will demonstrate the stages involved in transforming raw wool into cloth through carding, spinning and weaving. Visitors can also enjoy leatherworking with Gordon Baird, weaving demonstrations on the Hattersley loom, and lacemaking demonstrations by the South Lakeland Lacemakers as part of National Lacemaking Day.
