From Old Bean Grows Bak Choy: Stories of Family, Migration and Hope
Step into a different world without leaving Castleford. This moving solo performance by Hong Kong-born theatre artist Yuk-Lan Chan invites you to look through a “window” into the experiences of the Hong Kong community in Britain today.
In From Old Bean Grows Bak Choy, Yuk-Lan shares her own journey from the bustling streets of Hong Kong to a new life in the UK. At the heart of her story is her late father — affectionately called Old Bean (老豆 in Cantonese) — whose memory weaves through her experiences of leaving home, starting over, and finding new ways to belong.
Blending heartfelt storytelling with rich cultural detail, the performance explores questions we all share: What makes a place feel like home? How do we hold on to our roots while embracing change?
Special Feature – Creative Workshop (after 2pm performance)
Following the afternoon show, Yuk-Lan will lead a hands-on workshop (in Cantonese & English) where you can explore migration, identity, and home through art, movement, and imagination. This isn’t just a discussion — it’s a creative space to share stories, connect with others, and discover new perspectives. No drama experience needed.
