From Pigs to Pollen: the Lost Architecture of Sheffield’s Markets in Castlegate
Exchange Street, Sheffield, South Yorkshire, S2
Most people in Sheffield remember the Castle Market fondly, but that was only one of at least 15 markets held in the Castlegate area since the first one was officially recorded under the walls of the Castle in the 13th century.
Town planner and local historian Simon Ogden will trace this rich and restless history using plans and pictures, to understand why the markets have moved and changed so many times in the last 700 years and what might happen to some of their historic sites next. The dramatic impact of the markets on the River Sheaf will also be explained.
