Free author's talk: Sarah Jane Downing: 'The Architecture of Dress'
Saturday 13 September, 2pm
Taking the women of Astley Castle as our guides, this talk will explore the architecture of dress throughout history. Beginning with Elizabeth Woodville with her fabulous structured headdresses and the shockingly pointed ‘poulaine’ shoes of her era; looking at the solid buckram bodices worn by Lady Jane Grey and the codpiece worn by the men of the Tudor era. The farthingale and the ruff worn by Mary Fitton at the court of Eliza. Pre-booking for the talk is not required.
All weekend: watch the first public screening of a new documentary film about Astley castle, produced by Salford University media department at their 2024 'Futures' stay at Astley Castle.
Leaflets on the building's history and children's activity sheets will be available along with our knowledgeable Landmark staff.
