From VE Day to DDA and beyond: Heritage, Architecture and 'Accessible Leeds' in 2025

  • Available anytime

80 years since the end of the Second World War and 30 years since the passing of the Disability Discrimination Act, how accessible are heritage buildings in Leeds in 2025?

Working with this year's theme of 'architecture' and using the City of Leeds as an urban case study, this short talk looks at three listed buildings in Leeds as illustrations of causes for celebration and causes for concern in terms of an ongoing journey towards the vision of an 'Accessible Leeds'. The talk introduces (or reminds) listeners of the distinction between a social model and a medical model of disability. Audio description of all photographs is provided and closed captions are available. Some recommendations for further reading and watching are provided.
