Garendon Park part of Loughborough Heritage Open Weekend
The Obelisk, off Coe Avenue, Garendon Park, Loughborough, Leicestershire, LE11 4SE
Garendon Park opened to the public in 2023 for the first time in centuries! The Park surrounding Garendon Hall was landscaped in the 1730s, including several follies, which survive. The Hall deteriorated and was demolished in 1964, with the rubble used in the foundations of the M1. The Park was once the home of the De Lisle family and before that a 12th Century Cistercian Monastery.
The Friends of Garendon Park invite you to enjoy the landscape and learn of the history in a variety of ways.
1. Come, sit and chat at the Obelisk from 1000 to 1500 on Saturday and from 1400 to 1500 on Sunday. Knowledgeable stewards have a variety of information to share.
2. From the Stewards collect a map and guide yourself around the park. Footpaths are clear on the ground.
3. Join a 3 mile guided, circular walk around the estate including the Obelisk, Temple of Venus, the 100 Acre Field and an element of railway history. Either at 1030 on Saturday or 1430 on Sunday. Booking is essential.
4. Join a guided walk to visit areas not normally open to the public. See the site of the former Monastery Chapter House and climb the Prospect Mound. Either at 1430 on Saturday or 1030 on Sunday. Part of the walk is on rough ground. Booking is essential.
