The Generator, part of Loughborough Heritage Open Weekend
The Generator, Packe Street, Loughborough, Leicestershire, LE11 3BJ
We will meet at The Generator on Packe Street, where you will be able to see the building's progress, access the newly recorded stories of people connected to The Generator since the 1960s, and a rich archive of photography documenting the building's unique history. Have a first peek at some of the stories and memories of people who taught and studied in the building or have artefacts and stories connected to it. Memories include rooftop sunbathing, sneaking in after dark, star dropping performances and the smashing of tubes of mercury! Please feel free to come and share your memories and stories too.
The Generator Hall, along with The Old Art College, are the last remaining Technical College buildings from the time of Herbert Schofield - an inspirational educationalist. The College provided training as industries developed in the late 19th and early 20th Century and formed the basis for the now internationally renowned Loughborough University. The extraordinary generators (U-Boat engines salvaged after WWI), in the Generator Hall, provided electricity for the many College buildings in the centre of the town.
