Garendon Park with Loughborough Heritage Open Weekend
The Obelisk, Garendon Park, Loughborough, Leicestershire, LE11 4SE
Garendon Park opened to the public in 2023 for the first time in centuries! The Park surrounding Garendon Hall was landscaped in the 1730s, including several follies, which survive. The Hall deteriorated and was demolished in 1964, with the rubble used in the foundations of the M1.
The restoration and opening of the Park and structures was a condition of planning permission for a substantial housing development; our focus will be the newly restored Obelisk. Access on foot or by cycle is from Booth Wood, Coe Avenue, Stonebow Bridge and Washlands in Loughborough, or from Butthole Lane in Shepshed. You will find it on town maps.
At the Obelisk there is a commanding view of the park and stewards will be there to share information between 10.00 and 15.00 on Saturday 20th Sept and 14.00 to 15.00 on Sunday 21st Sept. Details will be updated on the website where necessary. Equally, if you wish to explore the Park yourself maps can be found online at http://www.garendon.freeuk.com/events.htm or obtained from the stewards.
There will be Guided Circular Walks across Garendon Park on both Saturday and Sunday. See below, or http://www.garendon.freeuk.com/events.htm for more details. One walk is around the estate with the other accessing the private areas, including the former Monastery Chapter House and the Prospect Mound.
