Construction of the Portland Harbour breakwaters lasted 22 years, from 1848 to 1870.
In one week alone, more than 24,000 tons of Portland Stone were deposited in the breakwater wall to the designs of it's Architect : James Meadows Rendel - Civil Engineer, under the direction of John Tolerton Leather - Civil Engineering Contractor.
GROVE PRISON MUSEUM tells the stories of the Convicts, Wardens and the impact of HMP Portland on the Island and its Community.

the entrance has three steps the Museum is close to the "Jailhouse Diner" cafe.
