Hadley Cemetery Chapel Open Day

Hadley Cemetery Chapel has been closed for many years - now we are exploring ideas for a bright new future as a community venue.

Conceived and built by the then Hadley Parish Council, Hadley Cemetery, Chapel and Lodge were opened in 1903. Plans for the new cemetery in Hadley began in 1902 when a loan of £2500 was approved to fund the work, much needed because Holy Trinity churchyard was almost full.

The cemetery opened officially on 25 March 1903. The Shrewsbury Chronicle reported ‘A pretty little chapel has been erected and there is also an attractive caretaker’s lodge. The work (both of the building and the laying out of the ground) has been done in an excellent manner, and when quite completed, will be highly creditable to the Parish Council and all concerned’.

Later the chapel fell out of use and was closed, but now, we invite you to come and see inside and find out about its history.

Directions:

Roadside parking outside the cemetery, or walk up from Hadley or Leegomery. Alternatively, pick up a heritage trail map from Holy Trinity Church and walk up to the cemetery - approximately 20 minutes - taking in heritage landmarks on the way.

Accessibility details

This is a building not usually open to the public, and a planned renovation project. Please note that we do not have toilet facilities. Parking is on the road outside the cemetery. There is flat access from the road to the chapel up a short path.

Additional information

Tea, coffee, soft drinks and biscuits will be provided free of charge. No toilets on site.
