Harvest flower festival in Poltimore Church of St. Mary the Virgin
Church of St. Mary the Virgin, Church Lane, Poltimore, Exeter, Devon, EX4 0AR
The church of St. Mary the Virgin in Poltimore has been the heart of the village and the Poltimore House estate and the Bampfylde family for over 600 years. It is a Grade 1 Listed building with a fourteenth century bell tower. The six bell date from 1723. The font is Norman and older than the church itself.
Some major restoration took place around 1880 including the moving forward of the Rood screen originally built around 1520.
Images of angels are everywhere on the walls and stained glass clerestory windows and the altar tiles. There is a large tomb and effigies of Sir Richard and Elizabeth Bampfylde erected in 1604 and there are also 4 funeral hatchments relating to the Bampfylde family.
The bench ends were carved by the sculptor Harry Hems in 1882.
On the 20th of September we are inviting visitors to enjoy a Harvest Themed Flower Festival in the church.
