Poltimore House and Grounds
Poltimore House, Poltimore, Exeter, Devon, EX4 0AU
Poltimore House has been part of the East Devon landscape since the first wings were built in 1560. Over the next few hundred years more wings were added and the front façade changed to the South facing Georgian aspect seen today. It has been a private home, 2 schools, a maternity and surgical hospital, nursing home and derelict building. Over the last 20 years volunteers have worked to maintain and start the restoration of this important site where the Treaty of Exeter was signed to usher in the end of the English Civil War in the South West.
Despite the terrible fire in April 2024, we are working with our stakeholders to create an achievable plan that will bring Poltimore House back to life as a major asset for the community.
There are also 13 acres of grounds to wander around.
Branches Café is open from Thursday to Monday each week for refreshments and light lunches.
From Friday 19th to Sunday 21st September there will be an exhibition of the history of Poltimore House and estate displaying documents, photos, maps etc in the Studio Kitchen. Volunteers will be on hand to explain the exhibits and answer any questions. Additionally, on Saturday 20th at 2.30 in the Shilhay Room, Prof. Henry French, Chair of the Poltimore Estate Research Society, will give an illustrated talk about the recent PERS book Poltimore in the 1920s.
