Hedon - Ivy House Gardens
Ivy House, Market Hill, Hedon, East Riding of Yorkshire, HU12 8JE
Ivy House was built in the 1780’s. In 1809 newly married James Iveson of the notable family of solicitors moved in. They served the borough for four generations as mayors and town clerks. It was also home to two generations of the Park family who further served the town as mayor 20 times between them.
After 1931 the Fewson sisters ran it as a private school for about 30 years. The garden has been the scene of many Sunday schools outings, church socials and fundraising parties, and will be open to visit for the many relics of old churches that were collected for the garden throughout the 19th century, to create follies and features using pillars and tracery from nay Holderness churches, and even Hull Minster.
The most impressive folly is Lady Albina’s tomb that relates to the murder of Albina by Drogo, the first Lord of Holderness. Lucy Brooke, local historian/archaeologist will be on hand to give details of the ruins seen.
Hull Regency Dancers will perform their period dancers on the lawn of the house on Saturday 19th and Sunday 20th September
On Sunday 20th only the Hull Community Theatre Group will perform acts from the latest musical play.
