All Saints Church, Snodland
All Saints Church, Mill Street, Snodland, Kent, ME6 5AT
A church has stood here since 7AD and was noted in the Doomsday book of 1086AD. From the 13th - 15th centuries the church was enlarged several times. It stands by the River Medway and is on the Pilgrims way and once had a ferry crossing used by pilgrims travelling through on their way to Canterbury. There are many interesting features which can be seen inside the church from the Poor Box, the original tower door with its ‘sanctuary knob’ and gravestones of famous local people in the churchyard; notably Thomas Fletcher Waghorn, who instigated the overland route.
Various activities will run throughout the day, including a talk about stained glass windows, a newly produced video of the church history and key features, made in conjunction with local Primary School pupils, Live Folk music from local artists will shared in the afternoon and we hope to have short tours and a short talk about the current repair and restoration work on the Church, thanks to a grant by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, thanks to National Lottery Players.
The Friends of All Saints Church will be there sharing their work and with merchandise available to purchase.
The Snodland Historical Society will be present with a stall sharing information about the church and local history, with material available to purchase.
The church will also be open as part of the Kent Churches 'Ride & Stride' day, so walkers and cyclists are welcome to visit.
