Hidden Histories: Lives between the pages
Hawkshead Grammar School Museum, Main Street, Hawkshead, Ambleside, Cumbria, LA22 0NT
Hawkshead Grammar School Library was founded in 1675 and used by schoolboys until the school closed in 1909. Like schoolchildren today, the boys left their mark by doodling, signing, and annotating the books as well as passing notes in the margins while bored in class. Our knowledge of many of our alumni is limited but by examining books in our Historic Library, we are able to uncover their Hidden Histories.
Since 2020, we have been undertaking a conservation and cataloguing project to preserve the collection for many more generations. Join us for Library Talks to learn about the cataloguing and conservation process, as well as some of the stories we have uncovered throughout this project.
Talks will run throughout the day, there is no need to prebook.
Please note we do not allow filming or photography inside the Library.
