High Corn Mill, Skipton, North Yorkshire

This mill was built in the 18th century. Its buildings straddle the Eller Beck, and are built over a single span arch. A mill on this site dates back to 1310. It was owned by Robert de Clifford. The building was bought by the Mear Family in 1991 and has been renovated and converted into a multipurpose building. Housing shops flats and offices. It is a key park of Skipton history having a working water wheel and a hydo-turbine.

There has been a water mill by Mill Bridge in Skipton since the Mediaeval period. The current building largely dates from the 18th century, with later alterations including replacement windows, and the filling in of openings on the top floor with brick. A turbine was installed in 1912. The mill also housed machinery to cut hay. The corn mill closed around 1946 and the building was used by an agricultural machinery company. George Leatt purchased it in the late 1960s opening the core of the building as a living museum. The building has been grade II listed since 1978.

The Mear family bought the Corn Mill in 1991 after the visit of Prince Charles (now the king) Much of the building was derelict. Since then every part of the building has been renovated retaining as much of its originality as possible. Offering a special moment when the owner of the High Corn Mill will be showing visitors around this historic building.
