Historical Town Centre Free Church
Cowper Memorial Congregational Church, 36 Market Place, Dereham, Norfolk, NR19 2AP
Before the church, a large townhouse owned by the Revd and Mrs Unwin stood in its place. During the last five years of his life, the hymn-writer and poet William Cowper lodged with the Unwin's. Cowper died in 1800, and after Mary Unwin's death, the house was sold and demolished, and the church was built in its place. The church was called Cowper Memorial Congregational Church in memory of William Cowper. This year marks the 152nd Church Anniversary.
The church is built of stone and has two double oak doors at the front, and iron railings mark the church off. Entering through the front doors, you are met with a beautiful site. The magnificent pipe organ stands before you, backed by three large stained-glass windows. The side walls have nine more stained glass windows, and overlooking the marketplace is the central stained-glass window, depicting the parable of the Good Samaritan. The atmosphere inside the church is tranquil, which is the ideal place for quiet reflection. A visit to the Cowper is an experience to be noticed.
