Join us to discover the interesting (and rather grim) history of Hexham's House of Correction.

The House of Correction in Hexham is a remarkable building, that is usually closed to the public.
North East Museums is offering free tours for Heritage Open Days. Join us to discover this buildings interesting (and rather grim) history.

Have a look around, find out more about the poor inmates’ daily chores and their bleak diet.

The tours will take place on Saturday 12th September at 11:00am, 12noon, 2pm and 3pm, starting from Hexham Old Gaol and involve a 15 minute walk to the House of Correction.

Due to limited numbers, booking is essential. To ensure that we can offer this experience to as many people as we are able, visitors will only be able to attend this tour once over the available dates. If you are unable to attend, please let us know

Usual admission charges apply if you also visit Hexham Old Gaol.

Accessibility Information
Due to the nature of the building, the House of Corrections is not accessible. The tour guide will have a folder of information and photographs of the first floor of the building.  

The tour of the House of Correction is suitable for older children.

The total length of the tour is approximately 45 minutes, including a 15 minute walk between the House of Correction and Hexham Old Gaol.

Admission charges to Hexham Old Gaol applies on 12th September. Admission charges are £8 (including voluntary £1 donation) for adults, and £7(including voluntary £1 donation) for concessions. Under 18s are free entry.
