Lemon Alley: talk
The Old Grocers public house, 25 Beastfair, Pontefract, West Yorkshire, WF8 1AL
Pontefract has burgage plots as a key feature of its medieval town planning. A burgage plot is a long, narrow strip of land extending behind a main building. The main building, such as in Pontefract's Market Place or Beastfair, was used as a residence, shop or public house. The yard (or alley) was used as an access to the plot of land behind the building. Often this was used for residential properties, such as cottages. Lemon Alley was one such burgage plot and built behind the main residence on Beastfair were many properties stretching as far as Newgate. Fortunately, Lemon Alley disappeared in the slum clearances of the early 1930's.
This talk and discussion will highlight the people of Lemon Alley in the late Victorian period and the conditions in which they had to live.
