Let's 'Clay' Marbles
Cathedral House, Unthank Road, Norwich, Norfolk, NR2 2PA
'Let's clay marbles' is a 'drop-in' clay workshop for children of all ages being run at the Cathedral (Children should be accompanied by an adult.). Participants will have the opportunity to make a clay tile using simple tools and techniques.
The workshop celebrates the beautiful Frosterley Marble that adorns the Cathedral's columns, pillars, and windows. The font is made from one single piece of the stone!
Frosterley marble is carboniferous limestone that is quarried from mines near Frosterley, a village in County Durham. The appearance of Frosterley marble is caused by the presence of white fossils of a particular kind of coral, crinoids, set against a dark grey or black background. When polished, it takes on the appearance of an ornamental marble. The contrast with the ivory-coloured stone of the Cathedral is highly effective. The exceptional quality and quantity of the Frosterley marble at the Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist is inspirational for all visitors.
- Be inspired by the Frosterley marble and the architecture of the Cathedral.
- Respond and create clay tiles to reflect on the Cathedral.
- Go home with your tile and skills to continue your making at home.
