This talk discusses the stained glass in the windows of the South Transept. Designed by Dunstan Powell in the early 1900s, these window depict a wide variety of subjects, from the Old and New testament, as well as from English history.

Virtually all the windows you will see at the Catholic Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist, Norwich, were formed by one company, John Hardman & Co., between 1894 and 1910. During the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, Hardman & Co. was one of the leading makers of stained glass in the world. The Cathedral's windows were designed specifically for the Cathedral by John Hardman Powell and his son, Dunstan Powell, and constitute one of the finest collections of stained glass that you can find anywhere in the country.

The windows in the South Transept are wonderful examples of the work of Dunstan Powell. The windows include stunning depictions of incidents from the New Testament, such as the Coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost (Acts 2) and the Marriage at Cana (John 2:1-12). The windows also provide insights into the history of the Catholic Church in England, with depictions of the English Martyrs, both of the Anglo-Saxon period and under the Tudors.
