Discover who entered the workhouse, the harsh realities of daily life and unexpected relief some found there — and learn what happened to those who died within its walls.

Step inside the world of the Knutsford workhouse and explore the experiences of the men, women, and children who lived there. Find out how poverty, illness, old age, unemployment, disability, and family breakdown could lead people to seek help from the local community.

Learn about the daily routines that shaped workhouse life, including work, meals, rules, punishments, and segregation of families. Discover how inmates spent their days, what they wore, where they slept, and the types of jobs they were expected to carry out.

The event will also examine medical care, education for children, religious instruction and the role workhouses played within the wider community.

Q&A to take place after the talk.

Not suitable for young children.
