Liston Church, Sudbury Open Day
Liston Lane, Liston, Borley, Sudbury, Essex, CO10 7HS
The precise age of Liston Church is uncertain: a charter of 1087 refers to an existing church in Liston, whereas architectural scholars date the earliest work in the present building to the early twelfth century.
A handsome west tower, deemed a fine example of C16 brickwork stands against the relative plainness of its flint rubble walls and red-tiled roof. Inside a wooden screen separates the nave from the chancel which features a stone reredo, painted figures and a geometrical pattern with red glass bosses (designed by Woodyer). The solid oak chancel ceiling of about 1500 has 4 well-carved canopied figures. The organ, a Georgian instrument formerly at Lyston Hall, was possibly the gift of Georg Friederich Handel.
