Meet Lancaster University researchers who have been documenting everyday people's voices for over fifty years.

Interviews are a key resource in investigating the everyday lives of people in the past, and for the Heritage Open Day Festival 2026 we are showcasing some of the collections held by our Special Collections and Archives which include interviews. The event will bring together the researchers who created these collections, focusing on their research processes and demonstrating over fifty years of research at Lancaster.

The event will feature talks by researchers who led three projects whose outputs are held in our collections. Elizabeth Roberts gathered oral histories for her inquiry into the social history of Barrow-In-Furness, Lancaster and Preston between 1870-1970. Since the 1990s Annette Kuhn has been researching memories of interwar cinema-going for her large-scale project Cinema Culture in 1930s Britain. Katie Waring managed an oral history project as part of the Jukebox : The Teenage Revolution (2023-2024), which focused on the boom in youth culture which accompanied the introduction of the jukebox to the UK in the 1950s and 1960s. There will also be a chance to ask questions about each researcher’s practice, methods, and findings.
