Exploring the everyday lives, traditions, occupations, and communities from the Indian state of Maharashtra - home to Mumbai.

“Maharashtra: Living Heritage” is an immersive cultural experience celebrating the everyday lives, traditions, skills, and communities that shaped Maharashtra — the culturally rich state of western India that is home to Mumbai.

Inspired by the 2026 Heritage Open Days theme of “Everyday Histories”, the event explores how ordinary people and working communities helped preserve traditions across generations.

Visitors will discover the many aspects of Maharashtrian life including:
• Farmers and village communities
• Warkari pilgrimage traditions
• Coastal fishing communities
• Paithani textiles and artisan crafts
• Forts and warrior heritage linked to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj
• Folk storytelling and performances
• Women’s household crafts and rituals
• Marketplaces, trade, and migration stories from Maharashtra to the UK

Through exhibitions, storytelling, live performances, interactive displays, music and crafts, the event aims to create a welcoming cultural journey for people of all ages and backgrounds.

“Maharashtra: Living Heritage” celebrates the idea that heritage is carried not only through monuments and history books, but through the everyday lives, traditions, and memories of ordinary people.
