Making sense(s): Sensory Tour of Holy Trinity Goodramgate York
Holy Trinity Church, 70 Goodramgate, York, North Yorkshire, YO1 7LF
With its high sided box pews, in place since the Reformation, Holy Trinity Goodramgate, York (part of the Churches Conservation Trust) is configured for listening; not looking. Come and experience this unique place in a whole new way. The volunteers and staff at Holy Trinity present a tour that engages your senses of hearing, touch and smell. Take a more immersive trip around our 800 year old building - smell the incense and herbs which will take you back to the building's foundation, hear about the beauty and history of the East Window through audio description and hold real archaeological discoveries made on site.
This tour is open to everyone (those with sight and those without). It will be produced in consultation with MySight York as part of their "Community Connect" project. MySight York is a hard-working, independent charity supporting local people within York and the surrounding areas to live well with sight loss. At the heart of the ‘Community Connect’ project is the belief that people living with sight loss should drive innovation and accessibility in our communities. The project seeks to transform activities and venues in York, making them more inclusive and accessible. MySight will be experiencing the welcome at Holy Trinity and the multisensory tour on offer for Heritage Open Days in order to provide feedback leading to improved accessibility and inclusion in the future.

There is one toilet on site with support rails, but it is only accessible for wheelchairs via an outside route. From inside, there are 3 steps up. In any event, access is only possible with volunteer supervision. Alternative toilets are available nextdoor to the site. Inside the building floors are uneven and light levels are low. The building is wheelchair accessible save for the Sunken Chapel. Temperature inside is usually colder than that outside the building.
