Stone and Story: The Architecture of Bedern Hall
Bedern Hall, Bartle Garth, York, North Yorkshire, YO1 7AL
Step inside Bedern Hall and uncover the stories hidden in its fabric. Built in the 14th century as part of the College of the Vicars Choral, the hall retains remarkable medieval stonework and one of York’s finest scissor-braced timber roofs.
During Heritage Open Days, we’ll be adding extra interpretation to help you explore the building’s architecture — from the craftsmanship of its original masons to the adaptations of later centuries. Look closely and you’ll even spot the traces of the mysterious bay window, now concealed within the wall, hinting at forgotten grandeur and alterations over the hall’s long life.
Whether you’re fascinated by medieval building techniques or just curious about York’s hidden history, this is a chance to see the hall in a new light.
