Minding Our Own Business: How and Why did Women’s Occupations Change in the Nineteenth Century?
History Hub at Magickal Emporium, 1 Marketplace, Halesworth, Suffolk, IP19 8BA
During the first fifty years of the nineteenth century there was a significant acceleration of national socio-economic change. The accompanying widespread transition occurred also in Halesworth. Women's occupations developed under these conditions. Not all aspects of life became better (low wages, political disablement, sex-specific unskilled jobs, workhouses and asylums were still prevalent), but many did, and female entrepreneurs often flourished here. This paved the way for women to make a significant leap forward towards financial independence and enjoy an increased share in the evolving national prosperity. Talk given by Lisa Hyde, Coordinator of the U3A Local History Group. Discussion and Q&A follows the talk.
