Moss Mill is the oldest Horrocks’ Mill remaining in Preston. October Salon and 104 collective are hosting Open Studios. The public are invited to look around the studios, gallery and workshop space.

Built in 1796 as a purpose-built, steam powered cotton spinning mill, today it is commonly known for the independent music venue The Ferret, which occupies the front unit of the building. The top 2 floors are resident to martial arts practitioners, including Preston Judo Club founded in 1970. The mill’s ability to continue hosting arts and music based projects has thankfully been ensured in the city by Music Venue Trust, with backing from Arts Council England.

Some may remember the unit to the rear of the building as being home to Strettles Bar, Bitter Suite, Ale Emporium and most recently, LIT bar. Today it is home to an artist-led DIY project space organised by the October Salon Collective and the 104 Collective who run the studios on the 1st floor. Together, we collaborate to bring Open Studios on this HOD event and invite the public to explore our spaces, see artworks in progress and discover how the building is occupied today. On the ground floor, exhibiting artists Molly Osborne and Harriet Cook-Hewitt will be resident in the gallery space with their show Unbecoming. Queer Artists are members of both collectives and we work to impassion LGBTQ+ networks and relationships.

When Open Studios closes, Brewtime will be hosting their monthly Jacob’s Join on the ground floor 4-7pm. Please bring a plate of food if you would like to join in.
