Nettlecombe Court Heritage Open Day
Nettlecombe Court, Williton, Taunton, Somerset, TA4 4HT
Visit Nettlecombe Court with Field Studies Council and explore two centuries of extraordinary plasterwork and architecture. Visitors will have rare access to the magnificent Great Hall, where Jacobean strapwork ceilings and pendants evoke the grandeur of the early seventeenth century. In the dining parlour and its chamber above, admire an exquisite dated overmantel of 1641, marking the Trevelyan–Strode marriage. In the elegant drawing and dining rooms, discover refined Georgian interiors, including neoclassical plaster ceilings and Ionic columns introduced in the 1780s. Finally, ascend the superb mid-eighteenth-century staircase, its plasterwork a fine example of Rococo style, to appreciate the skill of craftsmen spanning generations. Beyond these rooms, the house continued to evolve into the Victorian period and later, bearing witness to centuries of change. Nettlecombe Court is now a working residential centre run by the charity the Field Studies Council and is rarely open to the public making this Heritage Open Day a very special opportunity to experience its remarkable history firsthand.
The church of St Mary the Virgin (C13/C14, listed grade I). has open access and is situated immediately next to the court.
