Explore Northallerton’s past at the Heritage Hub! Discover prison tales, meet a costumed warrior, and learn about the Battle of the Standard with crafts and displays. Fun for all ages! Drop in to Northallerton Library on Saturday, 13 Sept, 1000-1300!

Following its move from the High Street, the Northallerton Heritage Hub has found a new home inside Northallerton Library. Come and explore fascinating displays, including the story of Northallerton prison and one of its most remarkable inmates – Sophia Constable. Imprisoned at just 11 years old, Sophia was sentenced to three weeks’ hard labour and four years in a reformatory school for stealing a loaf of bread.

Discover her story and the powerful statue by renowned sculptor Ray Lonsdale, located nearby. See the original prison door, still etched with markings from former inmates, the prison bell, and the roll of governors. Learn more about the work carried out as part of Northallerton’s Heritage Action Zone.

On Saturday 13 September, from 1000 to 1300, drop in to uncover the dramatic tale of the Battle of the Standard – also known as the Battle of Northallerton – fought between English forces and the Scottish army led by King David I. Meet our costumed warrior, explore maps and paintings of the battle, and play wargames with the Brompton Bankers - recreate the battleground with toy soldiers (suitable for adults and children)! Young visitors can enjoy puzzles and colouring-in, including making their own battle flag to take home. You’ll also get the chance to handle artefacts made from antler and reindeer bone – just like those used by soldiers nearly 900 years ago! Just drop in to the Library and have fun.
