Norwich Cathedral: Making music
The Dean & Chapter of Norwich Cathedral, Chapter Office, 65 The Close, Norwich, Norfolk, NR1 4DH
Music has been an important part of religious life throughout the cathedral’s history, and this tour will explore the contributions ordinary people have made – choristers, organists, and composers. On the way we’ll encounter a composer who may have known Shakespeare, an organist who attacked his neighbour with a dagger, a master of music with methods for training his choristers we might fund dubious today, and a ‘singing-man’ and composer who served the cathedral for 50 years, through the reigns of 5 monarchs. Discover the moments in history when making music in church is a problem. We’ll also visit some of the earliest images we have the cathedral, in the carvings on the cloister bosses. Join us on this story of the ordinary lives which have made music in our magnificent cathedral.
