Norwich Shawls - a talk by Helen Kennett
1-11 London Street, Norwich, Norfolk, NR2 1JF
Helen Kennett, who is based in Norfolk, is currently researching and promoting Norwich’s rich textile history, specialising in the history of ‘Norwich Shawls’. Her inspiration follows on from working with Pamela Clabburn and Helen Hoyte who were keen to preserve and promote them.
From the 1790’s to the 1870’s ‘Norwich Shawls’ were the ‘must have’ fashion items. What began as a desire to own an expensive imported Kashmiri shawl in the 1790’s led to a flourishing industry.
Norwich became both a national and international centre of the shawl manufacturing trade, through the enterprise of the various companies involved in the production of textiles based here who entered the business of the shawl trade. Gradually they gained national and international recognition for the excellence of their work.
