Sam Riley presents his research, undertaken for his Masters degree thesis at the University of Cambridge, on the architectural history of Jarrolds. His research traced the historic development of the business’ retail buildings and the influences behind its piecemeal expansion since John Jarrold arrived in Norwich in 1823. He places Jarrolds in the context of the emergence of the provincial department store in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
