On the Beat: Policing Victorian Berwick
Town Hall, Marygate, Berwick-upon-Tweed, Northumberland, TD15 1BN
Berwick ran its own police force until 1920, separate from the county of Northumberland. As part of their day-today work, the policemen kept logbooks of what they encountered. These are stored in the Berwick Record Office. From dealing with drunks, burglars, riots, assaults and general nuisances, a policeman’s life was a varied one.
Based on these logbooks and newspaper accounts, this walk will re-trace their footsteps around Victorian Berwick picking out some of the most interesting entries.
